Stacks of golden pancakes glistening with the carmelized sugar of the pineapple chunks, dripping with buttery rum coconut syrup and a mug of hot Kona coffee on the breakfast table…this is my idea of Hawaii being invited to my Sunday morning brunch. These pancakes are the epitome of taking a sweet and tropical bite out of life and seriously taste very much like their dessert counterpart, the pineapple upside down cake. Continue reading

Start Valentine’s Day on a High Note With Red Velvet Pancakes
Can you think of a better way to start your Valentine’s Day morning than with rich, soft, chocolaty Red Velvet Pancakes?! I can’t either. They even get served with a luscious, cream cheese dipping sauce. Pretty sweet, right?— pun totally intended…that’s just how I roll.
Seriously, these are absolutely decadent and for the handful of readers I have from the Los Angeles area, they are a dead ringer for the ones served from L.A.’s famous Buttermilk food truck. I have dreamt of these babies and craved them for days and now I can make them right in my own little kitchen…happy, happy me and now happy, happy you!
Ginger—Three Ways in Three Days
Remember Ginger from Gilligan’s Island? The hot, spicy redheaded vixen? Well, I do believe she was aptly named because ginger is all that and more. After all ginger is spicy, daring, and adds life to any dish.
Pear Fritters Have Sunk My Battleship
I know this must come as a great shock to you, but pear fritters are not the answer to your diet dilemma. They are made with whole milk, deep fried and then rolled in sugar. Does that not scream diet food? In all seriousness though, these fritters are some heavenly cross between funnel cake from the fair (c’mon you know you love it), and a deliciously airy homemade doughnut. These particular fried delights are elevated a touch as they are full of gingered pears and have a touch of lemon zest.
Pumpkin Pancakes—A Great Excuse to Eat Dessert First
Breakfast is the best meal of the day as far as I am concerned. For a sweet toothed baker like myself it is an excuse to rightfully eat dessert as a meal. Pumpkin pancakes are no exception.
These fluffy pancakes are packed with the good for you vitamins that pumpkins are famous for, but taste like soft and tender tiny spice cakes lightly sweetened with brown sugar and perked up with nutmeg and cinnamon. I even teamed it up with a creamy maple cream cheese topping (breakfast talk for FROSTING!). Doesn’t that spell dessert for breakfast to you? Continue reading
A Peachy, Puffy Pancake
My family makes something we call “Bubble”. Basically, it’s a Dutch Apple pancake, but growing up I never realized it had a real title and erroneously thought that we had invented it. Kids are like that. I still am not sure why we called it a bubble…I think because it gets kind of puffy and airy when it bakes in the oven.
Bubble is a perfect answer to any, “What’s for Breakfast?” question. It has a good number of eggs and a fair amount of milk to make it healthful and it has just a bit of sugar to make it slightly sweet. It’s especially attractive to kids everyone when adorned with beautiful cinnamon sugar apples. How could it not be? Continue reading
Cinnamon Rolls From the Kitchen of a Mother Hen
My husband’s fondest kitchen memory is of eating piping hot, sticky cinnamon rolls straight from the oven of a friend’s mom. At Mrs. Brooks’ house, growing teens—some who lived there and many who did not—would stand expectantly around the kitchen with their car greased hands and garage battle wounds and would stuff their mouths full while enjoying the great smells, tastes and companionship coming from her kitchen.
Can A Muffin Be Lost in Translation?
Can a muffin be lost in translation? This is what I want to know. You see, my food is my language. It is my way of communicating my thoughts and emotions which are otherwise indescribable. I’m not sure anyone else can understand my food language exactly the way it is intended, but I am convinced that it is a language all the same. It conveys my heart, my soul and my mind. Isn’t that a language?
Aloooo-HA Pineapple Upside Down Pancakes

Red Velvet Fourth of July Pancakes
If you have ever taken your kids to Disneyland, braved the swarms of people and the sun and waited in line an hour for each and every ride, then you can imagine what being at a gourmet food catering truck “carnival” is like. I first had the pleasure of tasting Red Velvet pancakes when Street Feast took over the Americana shopping center, and I got to sample my daughter’s bounty from the Buttermilk Truck. I had never heard of Red Velvet pancakes before, but I had always been a fan of a scrumptious Red Velvet cupcake so I was more than eager to test these.
