Death by the No Nut Chocolate Cookies

My favorite cookbook hands down is Death By Chocolate by Marcel Desaulniers. I can’t say that I’ve actually made more than 10 of the 30 or so recipes, but every recipe I have tried is my new favorite. These triple chocolate cookies are one of those favorites.

They are dark, extra chocolatey, soft with just a slightly crisp outer layer, and they are just a tiny bit salty. Can you think of a more perfect cookie? You can? It’s missing something perhaps? I know, some of you out there are literally jumping up and down shouting…”Where the heck are the nuts?” What was SHE THINKING?

Pumpkin Angst and Pumpkin Envy

Once again I am being tormented by my mother’s homegrown pumpkins.  What? Have you never been tormented by a pumpkin?  It’s a rather common occurrence over here.  I know you and I have had this conversation before.

The scenario is always the same…a beautiful bright orange pumpkin has been bestowed upon me from my mother’s overflowing garden, and it sits on my counter waiting, waiting, more waiting —until the decision has been made and the perfect use of this pumpkin comes to me like a vision. Battling the Whoppers and Why Cookies and Milk Will Never Be the Same

I feel I must start with a warning when introducing these chewy, melt-in-your mouth, Chocolate Malt Ball Cookies…consider the dangers of trying to rough chop two cups of Whoppers (round malted milk ball candies) as they roll away beneath the blade of a big butcher’s knife.

Please don’t think emergency room type of carnage.  It was more subtle than that.

Have Fun Making Whoopies!

Whoopie pies actually have a short but sweet history at my house.  I am not from the East Coast where they are a well loved traditional treat, nor did my grandmother make them from an old family recipe.  I had never even heard of them until a few years ago when I saw my first whoopie pie on Unwrapped, via the Food Network, and was mesmerized.  How could you not be glued to the tube when your chocolate cookie fantasy was right before your eyes?! Prim and Proper Black and Whites and the No Apron Kitchen

Black and White cookies are the perfect finale to any deli experience.  If done right, they are soft and tender, rich and smooth.  They are the soul mate to an icy, cold glass of milk.  This particular recipe from the All-American Cookie Book is that kind of nostalgic deli-style black and white.

Well, Hello Margarita and Hello Zesty Lime Cookies

Do you know what? I really don’t care if Cinco de Mayo is not truly a celebrated holiday in Mexico and seems to be more of an invention of the U.S.  I am just too darn happy to have a reason to enjoy some good tequila, take a bite of a spicy enchilada and end my meal with a couple of zesty lime cookies.

An Apple A Day Keeps the Doctor Away—Caramel Apple Bars

Sniff, sniff, cough, cough.  Everyone and their mother (literally) is sick at my house.  Do I  sense a sniffle or two coming from your direction as well?  I, doctor of nothing, prescribe to you a healthy dose of apples, topped with caramel, tucked inside sweet and tender, slightly salty crumbles.

My Love Affair with Cardamom—Rose Water Infused Pistachio Cardamom Cookies

Baking with savory herbs is a new fascination of mine.  I have recently been baking with rosemary, thyme and now cardamom. These cardamom cookies are delicate and soft with just a tiny crunch factor. Chopped pistachios studded throughout the cookie with a hint of rosewater, although indeterminable if you did not know, make this cookie bloom with flavor.
