Sweet And Crumby

Baking, a Love Story

A Pre-Thanksgiving Round-Up

Thankful. I have so much…too much. My grown kids are kind, happy and healthy, productive adults. That is everything to me. And my Golden Retriever, Sadie, is a constant love and complete noodge (I love both sides of her; the angel and the devil). I am surrounded by family and friends and always have food on my table and a warm bed. All of that is huge and Thanksgiving reminds me not to take it all for granted and to do what I can to help others to have the same necessities. Food and a warm bed should not be a privilege in a wealthy country such as ours. Unfortunately, that is not the case.  If you are feeling like you have more than you need, please think of homeless organizations in your area to donate to. One of my local favorites is West Hollywood Community Housing Corporation.

As to the food I’ve decided not to reinvent the wheel and just show you what Sweet and Crumby has got for the upcoming big holiday. I hope this list gives you inspiration for your Thanksgiving menu.

This Maple Roasted Pumpkin Salad would be a tantalizing and bright way to start off your holiday meal. Add some dried cranberries or make a cranberry vinaigrette to give it that extra festive flare.

Keeping the Aloha Spirit Alive with my Chocolate Mac-Nut Pie

Yes, I have just gotten back from Hawaii, Maui to be exact, and am completely in the Aloha frame of mind. I am still mentally sipping on Mai Tais, humming “Tiny Bubbles”, and trying so very hard to keep that relaxed, casual vibe going.

Tastes Great! Less Filling! {Orange Curd and Bittersweet Chocolate Tart}

I have to warn you…this is going to be a strange post. Let’s start with the important part so when I lose you, and I will lose you, you will have already gotten what you came for—this earth shattering, stop-the-world-from-spinning orange curd tart with a layer of bittersweet chocolate tucked underneath and a light and flaky crust to drive it home. Yeah, it is summer perfection; tart and cool when served with a little crunch of that chocolaty goodness.

Pumpkin Pie for One Anyone?

No this post is not about a single gal’s lonely Thanksgiving for one…and if I have just insulted you…I am sorry.  Instead, this is one of those brilliant accidents.  Although, it’s not quite as good as the accidental invention of Ivory soap, but it’s a great idea nonetheless.

Banana Cream Pie: The Cure to the End of Summer Blues

End of summer?!!! Say it ain’t so. Yes, I know technically speaking, we have a few weeks to go before the summer ends, but while some of your are still basking or sweating in the dog days of summer, my kids have just sulkily dragged their heels to school this week; frowns on their faces, backpacks weighing them down as a literal weight has been placed on their shoulders.

Battle Winning Lemon Meringue Pie

The battle is over.  I am victorious in the pie category of life.  There’s a pie category, right?  I’ve really been rallying for one because I’m in for the whole hog, the entire kit and kaboodle and everything but the kitchen sink.  I used to be a pie loser…really.  My crusts were tough and chewy, my meringues flopped, my gelled pies de-gelled or ran willy nilly all over my plate and such.  I honestly think years went by, and I really never attained a decent apple or lemon meringue pie. How sad, considering these seem to be the pocket aces of any red blooded American’s baking hand. Continue reading

I am a Haupia Pie “Pusher” and I am Absolutely OK with That

“Tsk, tsk, tsk,” I accidentally rudely said aloud as the lady in front of me, an obvious tourist (not unlike myself) and nOOb to the Village Bake Shop in Hanalei, was squandering her chance at tasting greatness when she began to order the Apple Crumb bar.   She turned around and gave me the “I’m smarter than you look”, arms folded and told me, “The Blue Book says that this place has the best Apple Crumb bar.”

Jealousy and a Fully Booked Tomato Tart

Yes, this is a re-post, but it drove me crazy this morning to wake-up to my blog which was seeming to be blinking “VALENTINE’S DAY” in neon lights.   Since I was a good wife on Valentine’s night and made an elaborate dinner while leaving my camera locked up in its bag, I have no photos and no new post.  So I have chosen one of my all-time favorite, easy peasy go-to recipes which you will thank me for if you get a chance to make it.  Those of you who are my old faithful followers and have been here seen it, I will have a new recipe up soon. I hope.
