These Lavender Scones Were Brought to You By Being Totally Prepared for an EBS (Emergency Baking Situation)

These pictures are lascivious. I know. How could I photograph these irresistible sweet and floral lavender scones with the blue Pacific peeking from behind and not invite you to stay? It seems rather rude to taunt you like this, but I was never in the running for the Ms. Manners’ title anyway so I am not terribly concerned.

A Pancake Is Worth A Thousand Photographs

Banana, Macadamia Nut and Coconut Pancakes

Once you are back from a vacation, it’s hard to get adjusted to the real world.  A world that does not wait for you and does not allow you to sit idly by an ocean while you sip a Mai Tai and read your favorite book.  Now that is was the life. The quietness of Kauai still waves silently in my ear. The loudest noise was a more than occasional rooster singing his “cock-a-doodle-doo”. Continue reading

If Han Solo Were a Doughnut…

Hi All— For those of you who have been loyal followers since last July, you are aware of a few re-posts.  I have been away basking in the Kauai sunshine, rain and ocean air with my family. Of course, eating was a huge part of my vacation, and I will be featuring some crazy amazing Island foods (Haupia Pie! —Coconut pudding, chocolate pudding and whipped cream on a Macadamia shortbread crust) that I have eaten over the last week and am determined to replicate so stay tuned…new posts are coming soon.

Sometimes, I wake up in the morning with a clear thought of what I am in the mood to make (and eat).  For example, one Sunday I woke up and thought, “I MUST make doughnuts.” And if you are going to bother with the the huge vat of oil, wait for the dough to rise and eat a ginormous amount of calories, then you may as well jump in with both feet and make Maple Glazed Doughnuts topped with Applewood Smoked Bacon crumbles.  Don’t you agree?

Why “Finals” Is the New F-Word and My Cheer ‘Em Up Chocolate Pancakes

Finals week.  Not many other two words could be uttered and elicit such a universally detested feeling, an audible groan and a few expletives shouted out.  I think I would rather say and hear the other f-word over and over again than have to deal with this f-word any more, and I am a fairly conservative girl mind you.

Either you remember your finals with disdain from back in the day, or you have kids who are suffering through them, or you are in the middle of those years right here and now when finals’ week is the abominable beast of your life. Continue reading

Dodging the Pork Roast and Sweet Potato Biscuit Bullet

Last night we were eating an apricot glazed pork tenderloin roast and the most beautifully soft and lightly sweet biscuits I have ever tasted.  Missing from our table was a household staple of red meat and Russet potatoes.

You see, we were eating without my teenage son who is a total red blooded, red meat eating carnivore of a teenager who is sure that french fries and french fries alone are the solution to any vegetable question (his biggest stretch is baked white potatoes…seriously). Continue reading

Aloooo-HA Pineapple Upside Down Pancakes

Stacks of golden pancakes glistening with the carmelized sugar of the pineapple chunks, dripping with buttery rum coconut syrup and a mug of hot Kona coffee on the breakfast table…this is my idea of Hawaii being invited to my Sunday morning brunch.  These pancakes are the epitome of taking a sweet and tropical bite out of life and seriously taste very much like their dessert counterpart, the pineapple upside down cake. Sometimes Perfection Just Needs to be Messed With:Chocolate Squared Banana Bread

One heaping cup of excellent quality unsweetened cocoa powder, three-fourths of a cup of bittersweet (70%) chocolate chips and two very ripe bananas.  Are you with me yet?  I should say so.

Truthfully, I am such a fan of my plain and simple chocolate chip banana bread recipe that I really never have seen the need to take it a step further and make it a double chocolate loaf.  I had the, “Why mess with perfection?,” mentality. Continue reading

“Oh My Gosh!” — Cinnamon Swirl Allspice Crumb Topped Muffins

I know…many of you make fun of my very long titles. They’re my trademark, what can I say?  This weekend was a Crazy in the Kitchen weekend.  Do you have those?  Are there days you just can’t get yourself out of the kitchen no matter how hard you try or don’t try? Does your kitchen suffer with battle wounds like mine does in every nook and cranny?

I Plead the Fifth—Cornmeal Strawberry Muffins

I have a confession to make…I am not great with surprises big or small.   This includes gifts for others as well as gifts for myself.  When I find a gift for someone that I just know is the perfect thing, I want to tell them immediately, not wait until the big day.

Start Valentine’s Day on a High Note With Red Velvet Pancakes

Can you think of a better way to start your Valentine’s Day morning than with rich, soft, chocolaty Red Velvet Pancakes?!  I can’t either.  They even get served with a luscious, cream cheese dipping sauce.  Pretty sweet, right?— pun totally intended…that’s just how I roll.

Seriously, these are absolutely decadent and for the handful of readers I have from the Los Angeles area, they are a dead ringer for the ones served from L.A.’s famous Buttermilk food truck.  I have dreamt of these babies and craved them for days and now I can make them right in my own little kitchen…happy, happy me and now happy, happy you!
